Para badminton: An Exquisite Guide


Para badminton is a category of badminton for athletes with a range of physical disabilities. It made its debut as a Paralympic sport for the first time at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. However, it has been played internationally since the 1990s. The sport is governed by the Badminton World Federation. 

The first World Championships took place in 1998 in Amersfoort, Netherlands. Since 2001, the tournament has taken place every two biannually. To date, there have been 12 World Championships conducted with the last one taking place in Switzerland in 2019. 

Events /Classes

Just like badminton, para badminton athletes compete in men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and also mixed doubles.

There are 6 classes of athletes to provide an equal platform to players of all disabilities. Specifically, there are 6 classes( 2 wheelchair and 4 standing) as explained below. 

The two Wheelchair classes and one standing class(players with lower limb impairment) play half-court for singles. 

Wheelchair

Athletes in the Wheelchair class compete in WH1 and WH2

Wheelchair 1 WH1: Players in this class require a wheelchair to play the sport. They are for athletes with both lower-limb and trunk impairments.

Wheelchair 2 WH2: This is for players who have impairment in one or both limbs and minimal or no impairment in the trunk. Like WH1, players in this class also require a wheelchair to play the sport. 

Standing

Standing Lower 3 SL3: Players in this class have an impairment in one or both limbs and poor walking or running balance. Moreover, in this class, a player must play standing. 

SL4: Here again a player must play standing but the players here have lesser impairment as compared to SL3. The player could have an impairment in one or both limbs and a minimum disability in walking/running balance. 

Standing Upper 5 SU5: In this, the players have a disability in the upper limbs. The disability could be on the playing or non-playing hand. 

Standing Stature 6 SH6: This class includes players that have a short stature due to a genetic condition also referred to as ‘Dwarfism’. 

Wheelchair Rules 

The player’s body is to be tied to the wheelchair with an elastic belt either around the waist or thighs or both. 

The player’s feet must be fixated to the footrest of the wheelchair. 

The seat of the wheelchair can be angled horizontal or backward but not forward. 

The wheelchair should not be attached to any electric device to assist its movement. 

The wheelchair can be attached with a rear supporting wheel that can extend beyond the main wheels. 

Crutch Rules 

A player with an upper or lower limb impairment can use a crutch. However, it should not exceed the player’s natural measurement from the armpit to the ground. 

Service Rules 

  • The shuttlecock must be hit in such a way that it goes in an upward direction. 
  • In wheelchair badminton, the shuttle must be below the server’s armpit at the time of service. It is not allowed if the shuttle goes higher than that. 
  • In wheelchair badminton, the wheels of the server and receiver must be stationary at the instance of serving.

Why Is Badminton So Popular in Denmark?


Badminton is an extremely popular sport in Denmark. A nordic country in Nothern Europe, Denmark has been ruling the badminton sport with just a population of 5.8 million. Notably, according to a recent ranking, Denmark houses 24 players within the top 50 World rankings. Also, the country has won 9 Olympic medals to date making it is the most dominant European country in the sport. 

Interestingly, India with a population of 1.3 billion also houses the same number of players on the world ranking list. India has won 3 Olympic medals in badminton. With a massive difference in population, how come Denmark is bringing up a revolution in badminton? 

The country of less than 6 million boasts a few of the top players in world badminton with World no. 2, Victor Axelson being the most prominent one. This may take you by surprise, that Denmark is the only European country to win an Olympic gold medal. In this article, I have discussed certain factors that have helped Denmark dominate badminton and give tough competition to Asian countries. 

Club System

The club system is one of the main reasons for the success of badminton in Denmark. It allows athletes to interact and compete with a variety of players including those that are far more skilled. Badminton Association of Denmark started with 6 clubs when it started in 1930. Now, it boasts 706 clubs with a total of 94,000 members nationwide. These clubs are very well organized and offer training sessions for most of their members. Each club has atleast one educated coach who trains on group or individual basis. 

Moreover, the goal of all the clubs is to reach the Danish Team League. Also, Badminton Denmark provides a wide range of opportunities for players of all ages and levels. Several tournaments are organized for players with National camps starting from the age of 9 or 11. They have also built up a National training center in Copenhagen where all the best players meet for their training needs under 4 coaches. 

Moreover, there are 6 regional talent centers that offer add-on training to the best junior players apart from their normal club training. In addition, the best of these junior players are offered to practice in one of the two elite centers where they are offered training sessions on a weekly basis. 

Weather

The weather conditions in Denmark are cold throughout the year which discourages the population from playing outdoor sports. Since badminton is an indoor sport, the majority of the population flock to different clubs to play the sport. 

Coach Education Program

Badminton Denmark hosts an extensive coach education program. They continuously help all clubs to educate their coaches. Training manuals are distributed to clubs so that proper badminton techniques can be used. Badminton Denmark has also introduced the “talent development strategy and program”, which offers the most ambitious badminton clubs information and guidelines to create a developing and fun training environment. 

Team League Culture 

The Danish Badminton League is a National team tournament played among all the badminton clubs in Denmark. Notably, the winner of the league qualifies for the Europe Cup. The League has been played since the 1930s in which athletes participate and play according to the same age level. Moreover, the categories start from U9 up to +50 team league competition. 

Role Models 

Denmark boasts a number of role models like Peter Gade, Jan O Jorgenson, Tine Rasmussen that inspire many others to take up the sport. Moreover, these retired players have moved on to coaching which has significantly helped in the development of the sport.  The Peter Gade Badminton Academy is one of the most prolific badminton academies in the world.

What can other countries learn from Denmark? 

The badminton structure in Denmark benefits maximum because of its volunteers. Similarly, a strong volunteer program in different countries can help to strengthen the training and development of badminton in the country. 

A proper club system is something that will motivate players of all ages to give in their best and bring about discipline in the entire system. 

A structured local tournament structure is another thing that other countries can learn from Denmark. Moreover, there are several tournaments organized for all age groups. Therefore, this brings about excitement and energy among all players to participate and give in their best. 

Another point that I would like to add is that instead of depending on the government for everything, changes can take place with voluntary participation from the public as well to improve the badminton structure in that country. 

A structured training and development regime for coaches as well as for the kids is another key aspect that other countries can adopt. 

Another key opportunity is to start a similar Domestic Tournament League for all age groups in such countries to increase participation and excitement in the sport. 

Final Thoughts 

All the clubs are run by unpaid volunteers that participate and contribute willingly to the development of the clubs and the sport in general. These volunteers train young players, arrange camps and tournaments at the clubs. This is one of the crucial reasons for the success of badminton in Denmark. Different Types of Smashes in Badminton


A smash is the deadliest and powerful attacking shot in badminton. If you know how to hit a smash with power and accuracy, then you have a huge advantage in winning rallies.

What if you add some variety to your smashes? There are actually several types of smashes in badminton. If you can add a few different varieties of smashes to your arsenal, that will make you more powerful. Then, you’ll be able to surprise your opponent and win the game pretty easily.

Smashing is not always all about hitting the shuttle as hard as possible. You can add a little bit of creativity to your smashes.

So, in this article, I’ll introduce you to some of the different types of smashes in badminton and give some tips to execute them correctly.

Let’s dive right in.

Full Smash

The first one on the list is the most common full smash, also known as the heavy smash or power smash.

Apart from using it as a finishing shot, a smash can help create a chance for a net kill, make the opponent out of balance, push the opponent to the backside of the court, and change the pace of the rally out of a sudden to surprise the opponent.

The main feature of this shot is that there is a lot of power behind this shot, and it is pretty difficult for the opponent to control this shot as it is so quick. As the name suggests, this shot is heavy. It is very hard to counter this shot and take the attack back.

This shot is usually used as an end shot, that is, to end the rally with a powerful hit.

The disadvantage of this shot is that it is difficult to recover from a full smash since you’re putting a lot of energy and power into it. 

When you put a lot of energy into the smash, your body will go off balance, and it will take a bit of time for your body to recover and come back to the base position (Returning to the base position is key to face the next shot).

The full smash can be used if the opponent is out of position, and you can finish the rally with a powerful shot. Also, this shot is very often used in doubles since you have a partner to support you and cover the front area of the court.

The full smash can be executed in different ways. You can do a full smash either by standing on the court (normal smash) or jumping before the smash (jump smash).

If you’re doing a smash by standing on the ground, the power of the smash will be less. But, you’ll have more control, and you can recover rather easily.

The jumping smash will provide a lot more power and momentum to the shot. Hence, it will be difficult for the opponent to react to a jump-smash.

But at the same time, you’ll have less control over the shot. If you’re doing a jump-smash, you have to be pretty good with the timing of the shot. Also, since you’re putting in a lot of energy, it’ll be more difficult to recover from a jump smash.

However, if you execute it correctly, you can end the rally and grab a point.

There are different types of smashes, depending on where you hit the shuttle. You can choose different angles to attack. You can either hit the shuttle straight or hit a cross-court smash. Check out this article to learn how to hit a cross-court smash correctly.

In doubles, you can hit the shuttle to the middle, in between both players, as a variation. That will confuse the opponents about who should take the shot.

Also, you can hit a smash using either forehand or backhand. The backhand smash is a lot more difficult to execute as most of the players have a weaker backhand compared to the forehand.

We’ve covered the basics of full smash. Now, let’s move on to the other varieties of smashes that you can do in badminton.

Half Smash

A half smash is a shot variety that you can use effectively in badminton. As the name indicates, a half smash is basically a smash with half the strength. This shot can be used in random points in a rally to confuse the opponent and to make it difficult for them to adjust to the tempo of the rally.

The advantage of a half smash is that you don’t need quite a lot of power to hit a half smash, and hence, you’ll not throw your bodyweight out of balance while you play the shot. It will be much easier to recover from a half smash and get ready for the next shot.

This shot can be very helpful in stealing points when your opponent is not ready or out of his position. Also, you can use this shot to apply pressure and take the attack to the opponent.

When you hit a half smash, you get a point, if the opponent isn’t ready for it. Even if the opponent is ready, chances are he/she will hit a loose shot, and you can end the rally with one more smash.

However, if the opponent is ready for the smash, he/she can handle a half smash easily compared to a full smash. This shot is not meant to be the kill-shot or the end shot. But, it can be a great setup shot.

Half smash can be more effective when you’re playing the singles game as you have a lot more area to place the shuttle.

When you play this shot, make sure you don’t lose the balance. You need to return to the base position quickly and be ready for the next shot.

Stick Smash

Stick smash is a shot that can be used as an element of surprise. We can hit a stick smash by rotating the forearm and tightening the forehand grip while hitting the smash. The power is generated through these two movements. You can hit this smash with your fully stretched arm.

The stick smash isn’t as powerful as a full smash. But it is not as soft as a drop. This shot can be used to execute a quick smash to surprise the opponent.

The main difference between stick smash and full smash is that we don’t complete the follow-through with the stick smash. When you hit the shuttle, you need to whip the racket back into the air where the racket came from.

Now, let’s move on to the next type of smash in badminton.

Slice Smash

As the name indicates, this shot is executed by slicing or hitting the shuttle at a certain angle so that it will change its trajectory and land in a different place than the opponent anticipated.

The slice smash can be considered as a very fast cross-court drop.

Hitting the shuttle at an angle will reduce the speed of the smash considerably. The slice smash is usually aimed at the corners of the opponent’s court at a sharp angle.

If this shot is executed correctly, it’ll confuse your opponents and throw them out of balance. It can be a very deceptive shot when you don’t overuse it.

However, executing it accurately is vital. If you don’t hit it correctly, it can be an advantage for the opponent as the shot is pretty slow, and the opponent can hit a powerful return.

A smash is one of the go-to attacking shots for all the badminton players. By learning the different types of smashes in badminton, you can add a little bit of flavor to your attacking game.

If you’re new to the game of badminton, you might be having no idea about the different types of shots in badminton. There are several types of shots played in badminton, and some unique terms are used to describe those shots.

In this article, I’ll try to help you with understanding the various shots in badminton in layman’s terms.

The most common shots played in badminton are serve shot, clear shot (lob), smash shot, drop shot, drive shot, and net shot.

Let’s look at these shots in detail and understand how to play them.

Serve

A serve or service in badminton is the first shot of a rally. In badminton, you need to hit a serve with an underarm hitting action in the upward direction. You can’t hit a tennis-style serve in badminton.

A serve is one of the most important shots in badminton that a player needs to master. If you hit a good service, you’ll get an advantage in the rally and hopefully win a point. But, if the serve is not so good, the opponent will be able to capitalize on that by hitting attacking shots, and it will be difficult for you to recover from that position.

A weak serve will give your opponent a chance to attack and take a point pretty easily. So, it is really important to hit the perfect serve. In badminton, there are different types of serves, such as high serve, low serve, flick serve, drive serve, etc. You can use these different types of serves interchangeably to confuse the opponent.

In badminton, you need always serve cross-court (diagonally) to the opponent. As it is an important shot that can give an edge to a player, there are several rules that you need to follow while doing a serve. And, the rules are slightly different for singles and doubles.

Clear (Lob)

The clear, also known as the lob, is mostly a defensive shot in badminton. This shot is often used by players to defend an attacking shot from the opponent and return the shuttle so that you can get more time to return to the base position and be ready for the next shot.

The goal behind this shot is to hit the shuttle up in the air, way over the net, and land on the backside of the opponent’s court. If you can hit the clear shot that sends the shuttle exactly to the opponent’s baseline, then it is considered the perfect defensive clear.

This shot can be very useful when your opponent is on the attack, and you’re under pressure. You can hit a lob in that scenario, which will give you some time to settle down before the opponent hits the next shot. Use this time to correct your footwork and get back to the base.

You can also use this shot in a clever way when the opponent is near the front area of the court, which will force him to go to the backside to retrieve the shuttle.

Just like a serve, a clear shot is a really important shot in badminton, especially in the singles format of the game. It is pretty easy to execute this shot compared to any other shots in badminton. If you want to play loner rallies in badminton, you need to learn how to hit a clear shot correctly.

Drop

The drop shot can be used as a deceptive shot to trick the opponent. This shot is usually executed from the back of the court to hit the shuttle just after the net.

The aim is to make the opponent believe that you’re going to hit a clear or a smash to the backside of the court and thus, making them ready to move towards the backside anticipating the shuttle. Then, rather than hitting a clear or a smash, you hit a delicate drop shot that lands just after the net. This will throw your opponent off balance, and you’ll get the point.

Even if they’re able to return the shuttle, chances are the return will be weak. You can then be ready and hit the next shot exploiting the mid-court and backside of the court, which is open now.

Unlike a defensive clear, which slows down the pace of the rally, a drop shot will maintain the pace of the rally. This is because the shuttle is not hit with a high elevation, and thus, the opponent will not get enough time to react. The reaction should be spontaneous, and the opponent needs to move faster around the court. This will further increase the pace of the rally.

You can hit this shot when you’re having control of the rally or are comfortable with the pace of the rally. If you hit the drop shot correctly, it will make your opponent rush forward and move around the court in a hurry, which will help you gain complete control of the rally.

You can execute a drop shot using either the forehand or the backhand. Also, you can hit a slow drop or a fast drop. A slow drop will have less pace but will land as close to the net, making it difficult for the opponent to reach the shuttle.

On the other hand, a fast drop will land near the mid-court area, but the pace of the shot will be high, reducing the reaction time for the opponent.

You can use your wrists to make adjustments to the drop shot to increase its effect. A cross-court drop shot will be much more effective than a straight one most times.

One thing you need to remember while executing drop shots is that you shouldn’t hit the shuttle at a very low pace. Even if the shuttle land pretty close to the net, the opponent will get a lot of time to come forward and return the shuttle.

Smash

The smash shot is one of the most popular and glamorous shots in badminton. It is an attacking shot, usually hit with a lot of power to end a rally.

A smash is a powerful and fast shot hit from high up in the downwards direction to the opponent’s court. Since this is a shot that involves a lot of power, it has a certain amount of risk as well. Playing this shot will need a lot of energy from you, and chances are you’ll lose a certain amount of control in the rally. Hence, it is very important to maintain body balance while executing a smash.

The idea is to get behind the shuttle as quickly as possible and hit the shuttle at its highest possible point. This will help you hit the shuttle at a steep angle downwards.

Make sure you’re in a comfortable position before you hit the smash shot. Smashing is not always about hitting the shuttle as hard as you can. Sometimes, you can add a little bit of creativity to the smashes as well.

Drive

Most often, we see that the opponent hits a drive shot in return as well as there are no better offensive replies for a perfect drive shot. We see this shot most often in the doubles format of the game.

The drive shot can be flat (straight and horizontal trajectory), offensive (descending trajectory), or defensive (ascending trajectory). You can play the drive shot with either forehand or backhand. You need to maintain a flat and straight racket face while executing a drive shot. Try to execute this shot only when you’re comfortable with the pace of the rally.

Net Shot

The shots in badminton along the net are called net shots. These shots help create chances and dominate the front area of the court.

The ability to hit the perfect net shots is really important in badminton. If you’re able to hit a decent net shot, the opponent will be forced to play a high lift or clear shot. It can end up giving you a chance to play a smash to end the rally and win a point.

There are different types of net shots in badminton, such as the tumbling net shot (or spinning net shot), net kill, and defensive net lift.

A tumbling net shot is used to hit the shuttle just over the net so that it will tumble across the net. This can be really difficult for the opponent to return. Even if the opponent returns a tumbling net shot, chances are it will be a weak shot, and you can finish the rally with a strong attacking shot.

The net kill is used to end a rally if the opponent plays a poor net shot that is too high. This is one of the easiest shots you can execute to win a point.

The defensive net clear is used when your opponent hits a decent net shot to your court. If the opponent is pretty good at netplay, you need to hit the defensive net clear to the back of the court to avoid the net kill. This shot is similar to the clear shot, but it is played closer to the net.

How to Improve Reaction Time in Badminton


Badminton is the fastest racquet sport in the world. And hence, you need to have pretty good reflexes and reaction moves to excel in this quick sport.

So how can you improve your reaction time in order to play the game better? In this article, we will go through the various tactics and tips to improve your reaction time in badminton.

Without any further ado, let’s dive right in.

Warming Up

Before you start a match, make sure you warm up and hit some shots to get into the flow of the game. Warming up will increase your blood circulation and adrenaline level, which will eventually result in quick reflex actions.

Do not go for a match directly without any warm-up routines. There are several exercises you can do to warm your body up. Try to do a few exercises to let your body know that you’re going to use these muscles to play badminton. This will help your muscles to be ready for quick movements.

After that, go to the court and hit the shuttle back and forth with your friend/opponent. Hitting some shots will help you get a feel of the pace of the shuttle and the environment.

Warming up is very critical as it will make your body ready, and you’ll make fewer errors in a match. Also, it will help you avoid injuries, which is the last thing you want when you’re playing an important match.

So take proper care of your body by warming up before every single match.

Gripping Technique

It all starts with the right kind of gripping technique. There are different types of grips in badminton, and you need to learn how to hold a badminton racket properly in order to become good in reactions.

The two main types of grips in badminton are the forehand grip and the backhand grip. These grips are used corresponding to forehand shots and backhand shots. 

Since these two grips have some major differences, it is difficult to use them interchangeably if you don’t learn the right technique. Changing your racket from one grip to another is a really important skill that you need to master.

If the pace of the rally is too quick, the opponent might be hitting shots to your forehand and backhand area interchangeably. So, in order to take these shots, you need to quickly change your grip. 

If you don’t practice changing grips and using this skill, your reaction time to these shots will be high, and you’ll end up losing important points.

Do not hold the racquet too tightly. You need to have a loose grip so that you can change the grips quickly according to the incoming shots.

When your grip is loose, you might be wondering how you would generate power to the shots? For that, you can use finger power and do a very quick push.

If the rally is very flat and close to the net, you can use a kickback movement (the whip) after hitting the shuttle to get ready for the next shot.

Footwork

Just like grips, footwork is a major technique in badminton, which you should master to improve your overall game. Learning the right kind of footwork will enhance your speed and reactions, and you’ll be able to take more shots covering more areas of the court.

The basic footwork in badminton is centered around the base position, which is the center of your court. For each shot, you move towards the shuttle from the base position, complete the shot, and come back to the base position to get ready for the next shot. This process is repeated for all the shots.

You can change the position sometimes according to the game situation. For example, if you’re sure that the opponent will hit a smash towards your court, then you can move a little backward to get more time to react to the shot. 

Also, if you hit a smash and you’re sure that the opponent will hit a weak shot in the air in the frontcourt, you can move a little forward and quickly finish the rally with a net kill.

It is also important to learn how to move to different corners correctly and come back within less time. For example, if you move towards the front corners, you need to make a split-step first. Then, take a step towards the corner with your non-racket leg. Then, lunge with your racket leg and hit the shuttle.

Similarly, you need to do the right kind of movements correctly to reach the different corners and hit the shuttle within the least amount of time.

Training For Fast Reflexes

If you want fast reflexes, then the most critical thing other than technique is training. The more you train, the better your reflexes will be.

There are various kinds of training drills and practices you can do to improve your reflexes.

Try to practice a lot with a tight grip and a loose grip and see the differences by yourself. Continuous practice will help you become better at reacting to a shuttle as soon as possible. Practicing these drills will help you understand the flaws in your technique, and you’ll be able to correct them.

If you have a friend or someone to help you, go to a badminton court and ask him/her to feed shuttles to various positions. As you can see in this video, try to react quickly to the shuttles coming at you. You might not be able to react to the shuttles as fast as that guy in the video.

Start at a slow pace and gradually improve the speed. If you practice enough times, you’ll be able to increase your speed level.

Having a friend or a coach who knows badminton will help a lot. When you do practice these, he/she will be able to point out any mistakes with your technique. If you are practicing in a badminton academy with proper coaching, then that would help a lot.

Even if you can’t afford to go to a badminton academy, try to practice with your friends, and you’ll definitely improve your skills with hard work and practice.

In badminton, just like any other sport, improving your hand-eye coordination will eventually lead to improving your reaction time.
